What NOT to Write Your College Essay About

Be the essay that AOs ~actually~ remember.

Your college essay might be the most important 650 words you write in high school. It's your chance to show AOs who you really are beyond test scores and grades. But some topics can seriously tank your chances of getting that acceptance letter.

Here's what to avoid:

1. Romantic Relationships

We get it—breakups hurt. But writing about how "my breakup made it impossible for me to focus in class and my grades suffered" isn't going to impress anyone. Admissions officers want to see resilience, not relationship drama that distracted you from what matters. Save the heartbreak stories for the group chat.

2. Convoluted Metaphors

"My life is like a cereal box"... wait, huhhhh? Super abstract comparisons often leave readers confused instead of impressed. Keep it real and straightforward. Your essay doesn't need to reinvent literature—it just needs to sound authentically like you.

3. TMI Medical Stories

Details about "wounds oozing all over the kitchen table" aren't just gross—they're distracting from the real you. While health challenges can shape your character, graphic descriptions cross the line from powerful to uncomfortable.

4. First-World Problems

Complaining that "my twin always gets more attention than me" or other relatively minor issues can come across as tone-deaf and privileged. AOs read thousands of essays—many from students who've overcome serious adversity. Keep perspective on what constitutes a genuine challenge.

5. Having "No Passions"

Saying "I have nothing to write about because my life is pretty boring" is waving a red flag 🚩. Everyone has something that drives them, challenges them, or excites them. Dig deeper. The most ordinary experiences can reveal extraordinary insights when you reflect thoughtfully.

What SHOULD You Write About?

The best essays often explore everyday moments that reveal something meaningful about your character. That TikTok trend you started to raise awareness about climate change? It showcases your creativity and social consciousness! The Discord server you created for your town's gaming tournament that unexpectedly became a community hub? It demonstrates your leadership skills and ability to build connections.

Remember, AOs aren't looking for perfect people or dramatic stories—they're looking for authentic voices and students who will contribute postively to their campus.
